V5K Race Director Dave McGillivray named a "Hero of Running"
When the Vision 5K was organized in the fall of 2006, the founding charities realized that their world-class ambitions demanded a world-class race director. Naturally, they called on Dave McGillivray.
McGillivray, the long-time race director of the Boston Marathon, joined the team and the result was an inaugural race that felt like an annual classic. Just months later, his leadership and dedication to endurance sports was recognized by Runner's World magazine, which named McGillivray one of its "Heroes of Running."
"He's an endurance-running machine, a tireless philanthropist, and one of the best race directors the world has ever seen,' praised the editors.
And McGillivray's accomplishments are certainly beyond the ordinary. As the founder and president of DMSE Sports, Inc., a special-event management company, McGillivray has produced or consulted on more than 750 mass-participatory athletic events throughout the world, including 20 Boston Marathons; the 2004 USA Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials; the 1990 Triathlon World Championship, the 1998 Goodwill Games Triathlon, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
McGillivray is also no ordinary athlete. Among his feats are a 2004 run across the United States, eight Hawaii Ironman Triathlons, and 119 marathons. For good measure, every year on his birthday he runs the number of miles that correspond to his age; this year he turned 53.
With or without this most recent recognition, McGillivray is a hero to everyone who took part in the Vision 5K--and he'll return with DMSE for 2008 to make our race even better than ever.
